MOVING WITH KIDS

As if relocating wasn’t stressful enough..

Leaving close friends and schoolmates behind can be a traumatic/unsettling experience for children and parents alike.  Here are a few easy tips to help make a potentially difficult and emotional process flow a bit more smoothly.

– Project a positive attitude to your kids
– Manage your stress level
– Buy a special address book so your child can gather addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses
– If possible, bring your kids along when you look at houses
– Gather information on the sports or other extra-curricular activities that interest your child
– Before you move, hold a going-away party for your child
– Put together a scrapbook/photo album of the old house
– Unpack the kids’ rooms first
– Be consistent with discipline
– Take your child to visit his or her new school and arrange to meet the teachers
– Supply your children with several copies of your new address and phone number
– When you move into your new home, begin a keepsake; encourage your child to write about his or her hopes/expectations
